The Minnesota Night Flag

The Minnesota Night Flag
The Minnesota Night Flag by Nikk VanLiew of Brooklyn Park

The First thing noticed is this design is composed of 3 colors:

  • Black – Represents the beautiful Minnesota night sky
  • Blue – Represents the beloved Minnesota water from our “10,000 Lakes”
  • White – Represents our snowy winters

The design also incorporates 2 easily noticed objects:

  • Polaris (the north star) – Representing Minnesota’s nickname “The North Star State” which alludes to our rich history and old flag.
  • The Loon(s) – Representing Minnesota’s state bird with a baby loon on it’s back representing Minnesota’s value of love and/or family.

What’s new, different, and better vs the old flag:

  • Clean & simple design consisting of 3 bold colors
  • No letters, numbers, or phrases
  • Flag looks just as good backwards as it does forward
  • No negative symbolism towards the Native American people
